Jointly-Sponsored Study Abroad Programs
The Arabic Language Institute in Fez (ALIF) has established several jointly-sponsored programs with various universities and organizations. These programs have specialized curricula designed to meet the specific needs of the partner institution. While most of these programs involve instruction in Arabic, they also include other cultural and academic components not normally encompassed by ALIF’s regular programs. Details on each of ALIF’s current jointly-sponsored programs are listed below.
ALIF/University of Florida Summer Study Abroad
This is a six-week summer intensive course in Modern Standard Arabic. It is open to beginning, intermediate, and advanced Arabic students, all of whom receive university credit from the University of Florida-Gainesville. (Students not currently enrolled at the University of Florida are welcome to apply to the program.)

ALIF/ Dartmouth College Foreign Study Program
This is a twelve-week program with a minimum of eight students. All students are enrolled in three courses: 1. "Arabic as a Cultural System" (Colloquial Moroccan Arabic); 2. A course on the city of Fez, "Discovering an Islamic City" , taught by an ALIF professor; and 3. A course taught by a visiting Dartmouth professor. This last course varies every year, depending on the specialization of the visiting professor: "Religion, Reason, and Reform in Morocco", "History, Politics and the Moroccan Novel", and "The Islam of Morocco", for example. ALIF/ University of Leeds Year Abroad Program
This is an entire academic year of intensive Arabic for undergraduate students from the University of Leeds, England. All students have completed one year of Modern Standard Arabic. Students study both Colloquial Moroccan Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic. They also have course components on translation, media, etc., and complete an extensive research paper in Arabic under the supervision of their ALIF supervisor. All students receive one year of university credit. (Students not currently enrolled at Leeds University may apply to the program).

This six-week summer program concentrates on Arabic language study and an area studies course. Students receive 3 hours of Wake Forest credit for the area studies course and 6 hours of transfer credit for the intensive language course. Non-Wake Forest students who are applying for this program are encouraged to contact the Center for International Studies regarding how the courses are transcripted.

ALIF/St. Olaf College Programs
St. Olaf offers two programs at ALIF. The first, "Water in Morocco: Precious, Precarious, and Problematic," is for students of Biology and Environmental Studies. In Morocco, like much of the world, safe drinking water, water for basic sanitation, or water for agriculture, is in short supply and sometimes not available at all. Students examine water from a scientific perspective-chemical, physiological, ecological-and delve into the historical, political, economic and social implications in Morocco—a country of diverse cultures and biotic zones from two oceans, mountain ranges and the driest of dry deserts.
St. Olaf offers a second month-long course in January, "French Language and Moroccan Culture in Fes." Students participate in an immersion experience that includes home stays with local, French-speaking families. The course focuses on Moroccan culture yesterday and today, emphasizing the multicultural aspects of Morocco.

This program, called Duke in the Arab World, consists of six weeks of Arabic instruction and a numbers of cultural events. Students enroll in two courses, one on religion, security and citizenship, and the other on the Arabic language. Both are designed to maximize students' understanding and exposure to a diverse yet connected human experience in the Arab world.

ALIF/Bowling Green State University, “Music and Healing in Morocco"
“Music and Healing in Morocco” is a winter session study abroad course that is open to all students, especially those in music, health, and development. We learn about and experience performances of diverse classical musical traditions and ritual healing ceremonies including those of the Andalusian music, the West African derived Gnawa tradition, and Sufi brotherhoods like the Hamadsha and Issawa. Over three weeks, we will explore the depth of contemporary healing practices in contemporary Morocco, especially those based around music, dance, and sacred ritual.
