Outside Funding

ALIF encourages applicants to apply for outside funding. Below is a partial list of scholarships and grants that have been used in the past by ALIF students.

1. Boren Awards: Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are for U.S. citizens and can be used for summer programs, semester abroad programs, or even long-term study programs.

2. FLAS (Foreign Language and Areas Studies scholarships and fellowships) ALIF courses meet all criteria for FLAS eligibility. A summer FLAS fellow must be enrolled in a for-credit, intensive language program that meets the following criteria:

  • at least 6 weeks in duration
  • a minimum of 140 contact hours for beginning or intermediate level,
  • at least 120 contact hours for advanced students,

The ALIF summer terms are 6 weeks (120 hours) and 9 weeks (180 hours). Students wishing to do 140 hours in a 6 week period can opt for 20 hours of private lessons.

To be considered for a fellowship, an undergraduate student must be at the intermediate or advanced study of a less commonly taught language. If the program is not offered in the U.S., then the FLAS recipient may study at the beginner level. Therefore, students coming to ALIF with FLAS studying MSA must enroll in MSA 201 or higher. If you elect to study Darija, you may enroll in ALIF’s CMA 101.

3. Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad award This program provides grants to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months.
